Economics Department Looses Emeritus Member
On October 12th, 2021, James P. Gander passed on peacefully in the night. James had been a part of the economics department at the University of Utah as a faculty member and then esteemed emeritus. He was a friendly face to everyone in the department with a cheerful disposition and interest in current research projects. He spent his last days surrounded by loved ones while reading and doing his calculations.
Professor Peter Philips shared that Jim "was kind to me when I arrived and, along with Steve Reynolds, helped me all along the way. He taught me to help young faculty, and in appreciation, I try to do this always." Department chair, Dr. Norman Waitzman, adds his thoughts about James, saying, "Jim was always personable and respectful, even though he always strongly and articulately expressed his views. He was a great mentor, not just in terms of academics but in terms of personal comportment."
All are welcome to celebrate his life the evening of Friday, November 5th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor 3651 South 900 East, SLC 84106. The following morning, Saturday, November 6th, there will be a service at the St. Catherine of Siena Newman Center beginning at 10:00 am. The Newman Center is at 170 S. University Street, SLC 84102. A graveside memorial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
